Excelsior Overture began its life as a brass quintet before being reimagined at the request of the Verona Area Community Band as an expanded concert opener for their Summer 2025 program. True to its title, which suggests upward motion and vibrant energy, the work embraces the overture tradition by presenting a succession of contrasting dramatic ideas within a concise formal span. Though these themes are introduced only in brief glimpses, they combine to create a dynamic and engaging whole. Brilliant in character and economical in scope, Excelsior Overture highlights the expressive range, color, and technical vitality achievable for a grade 3 opener or closer.
